Depth Notes

Reflections on psychiatry, identity, cultural resilience,

and the interior lives of high-achieving women.

It begins with a guide

DepthWorks Psychiatry integrates narrative reflection, visual awareness, and nervous-system-informed care to help high-achieving women understand not only their symptoms, but the identity structures beneath them.

These guides offer a glimpse into that approach.
Not therapy. Not diagnosis.
But a structured opportunity to see yourself with greater clarity.

The Identity Reflection Guide explores the survival roles beneath anxiety, perfectionism, and hyper-responsibility.

The Visual–Narrative Reset uses photography and story to illuminate how you function under pressure, and who you may be ready to become.

Begin with either.

Each is a thoughtful entry point into the DepthWorks lens.

More Than Just Research

The Scholarly Journey in NP School

More Than Just Research—A Commitment to Excellence

In the world of nurse practitioner education, the term scholarly sources may feel like just another requirement, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a promise—a commitment to excellence, to staying informed, and to ensuring that every piece of knowledge we apply in practice is backed by the best possible evidence.

Unlike quick reference websites or textbooks that provide summaries, scholarly sources are where the depth of medical science lives. They are the foundation of critical thinking, the backbone of clinical reasoning, and the key to understanding not just what to do, but why we do it.

Imagine this: a patient walks into your clinic with symptoms that don’t quite fit the textbook definition of a condition. You have a choice—you can rely on general knowledge, or you can pull from the latest research that explores emerging trends, new treatment guidelines, and innovative approaches to patient care. This is what sets apart a truly prepared NP: the ability to seek out, interpret, and apply the most current evidence.

The Struggle is Real—But So is the Growth

Let’s be honest—learning how to find and use peer-reviewed, high-quality sources can feel overwhelming at first. It’s tempting to rely on Google searches or familiar websites like Mayo Clinic or WebMD. But in NP school, we’re asked to go deeper.

We are trained to look at clinical trials, systematic reviews, and practice guidelines created by experts in the field. It’s not just about finding the easiest answer—it’s about ensuring that the care we provide is based on the best evidence available.

Does that mean it takes more time? Yes.
Does it mean we’ll have moments of frustration? Absolutely.
But it also means that when we step into our roles as advanced practice providers, we’ll do so with confidence, knowing we have done the work to provide the highest quality care to our patients.

Building the Habit of Lifelong Learning

The beauty of scholarly research is that it doesn’t stop when we graduate. As nurse practitioners, we are stepping into a world that is constantly evolving. New diseases emerge, new treatments are discovered, and best practices shift over time. Our ability to seek out and apply new knowledge is what will keep us at the forefront of patient care.

So, as we dive into research articles and navigate databases, let’s remember that this is more than just an academic requirement. This is preparation for the real world—where our ability to find and interpret research can mean the difference between outdated practices and life-saving interventions.

A Final Note: You Are Capable, You Are Growing

To every NP student who has ever felt frustrated by the scholarly research process—know this: you are capable. Every search, every journal article, and every critical analysis is shaping you into the clinician your future patients will trust with their health and well-being.

This journey is not just about checking boxes or meeting program expectations. It’s about becoming the best version of ourselves as healthcare providers. It’s about embracing the responsibility that comes with the privilege of caring for others.

So, take a deep breath. Keep going. And remember, every bit of effort you put in now is preparing you for the incredible work ahead. You’ve got this.

ABOUT ME

I’m Patria Alexander, PMHNP-BC, an integrative psychiatric nurse practitioner - providing psychiatric care with depth.

My work honors both science and story. I believe psychiatric care should respect your culture, your legacy, and the responsibilities you carry, not reduce you to a diagnosis.

In our work together, we move beyond symptom management to restore clarity, steadiness, and self-trust, through precise medication management, narrative reflection, and culturally grounded practice.

This is care designed for women who are used to being strong, and are ready to be supported.
