The beliefs, habits, strengths, and ways of coping that travel through generations, sometimes without anyone naming them.
How your relationship with your child can bring your own childhood, your mother, and your hopes for the next generation into view.
What it means to be “the strong one,” the dependable daughter, or the person everyone assumes will manage it all.
How you carry your culture forward while making a life—and perhaps raising a child—between worlds.
How distress can look different in a child, an adolescent, and an adult, even within the same family.
The words your family used for worry, sadness, or struggle before anyone used clinical language.
It’s a way of considering how mental health is shaped across generations. At DepthWorks, I explore family history alongside development, relationships, culture, and individual experience. What runs in a family can raise useful questions, but it does not determine anyone’s diagnosis or future.
I’m speaking especially to the bicultural or diaspora woman who is used to being the strong one. You may be thinking about your mother, raising a child, or noticing which parts of your family’s story you want to carry forward.
Start with Intergenerational Psychiatry: What Do Families Pass Down Besides Genetics? It introduces the question at the heart of DepthWorks. From there, explore whichever essay speaks to something you’ve noticed in your own life.
You can read essays and reflections. I’m also developing educational resources that may include downloadable guides, webinars, and courses. I’ll share details when each offering is ready.
